Are we really living in a democratic society?
ref #210
With voting only once every 4 years or so, and then with only the ability to actually vote on a party - not directly on the issues which we feel need to be addressed - are we really living in a democratic society? see in-depth for more

We only live in a democracy on vote day.

The problem with democracy in the UK is that it is a top down system. Democracy can only really work when it is bottom up. This will involve radical restructuring of the way in which we vote - and acceptance that we are big enough to deal with issues ourselves. Until we see that our vote really counts then we will not be truly democratic.

Next Question... http://humanopinion.org/node/211

The voting system is too biased to ensure a proper democracy, plus an unelected second chamber. the prime minister has way too much power for the representative of a party that has won an election, as opposed to an individual, could we really say Blair is "the first among equals?" plus, there's very little choice in the parties we can vote for, and their ideologies. but then, there is no perfect democratic system, and ours is better than a lot of countries ruled by crazy dictators. Mmmmm political ranting!
