Is New Zealand being ripped off by the large and controlling cellphone companies?

In New Zealand we have to pay for our pre-pey cellphones, the cheapest (when i was last there) being anywhere upwards of at-least $80 and our texts and calls are largely quite expensive. In other countries which have not been so monopolised by communication giants there is a healthy level of competition and companies almost give away mobile phones and credit....
